A reference book, made beautiful by careful page design and numerous illustrations. Editor Willis's introduction explores the great themes of myth. Subsequent chapters are devoted to 19 different countries or regions, the pictures affording casual browsers a stimulating variety of tones and flavors, while the text offers a sampling of the beliefs, main characters, and themes of each locale's mythology. Certainly a worthwhile and thoughtfully prepared compendium. We lament the use of paper with an odor (though all other paper characteristics seem fine); we've recently seen other books printed in China that don't have this problem. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or. A comprehensive overview of the world's major mythological traditions includes theories about the origins and meanings of myths, key mythological themes and subjects, and a regional treatment of mythmaking cultures. Natural Science & Readers' Subscription Bk Clubs. Looks at the mythology of Egypt, the Middle East, India, China, Tibet, Japan, Greece, Rome, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Australia
