But soon after arriving at Monticello, Homer finds himself deeply involved in the life of not only one Tom, but two - and they're both in trouble: Thomas Jefferson is in trouble with the historians, Thomas Dean with the law.
Fern Fisher, Homer's former student, must deal with the President's case first. She's doing a special project at Monticello - writing a book - hoping to restore Jefferson's dignity in the face of attacks based on Sally Hemings and slavery.
Then there's the problem of Tom Dean. Who is this person trespassing in the woods behind Monticello, living in a tent, and invading the splendid Dome Room, where Fern has set up shop? When Tom tells Fern that the only good thing Jefferson ever accomplished was the Lewis and Clark expedition, she wonders if he's an enemy to her reverent mission.
But perhaps he's another kind of enemy: there's a serial killer on the loose, preying on young women. As the trail comes closer to Monticello, Tom Dean is taken into custody.
A murder on the ground of Jefferson's mansion at Monticello leads history buff Homer Kelly on a search for Tom Dean, a young man seen trespassing on the property, who has become the prime suspect in the killings of several local women.
