Scudder is a functioning alcoholic with apparently super-natural powers when it comes to determining whodunit. Nothing I read even remotely pointed in the direction of the killer, yet within a few pages Scudder has not only twigged to the murderer, but confronts him and goes on to shed light on a whole other previously-unknown facet of the storyline. I was left scratching my head, and scratching Block off my list.
