The head of the FBI's investigative unit that deals with serial killers demonstrates his celebrated talent for getting inside their minds

Simon and Schuster
Discover the classic, behind-the-scenes chronicle of John E. Douglas’ twenty-five-year career in the FBI Investigative Support Unit, where he used psychological profiling to delve into the minds of the country’s most notorious serial killers and criminals—the basis for the upcoming Netflix original series.

In chilling detail, the legendary Mindhunter takes us behind the scenes of some of his most gruesome, fascinating, and challenging cases—and into the darkest recesses of our worst nightmares.

During his twenty-five year career with the Investigative Support Unit, Special Agent John Douglas became a legendary figure in law enforcement, pursuing some of the most notorious and sadistic serial killers of our time: the man who hunted prostitutes for sport in the woods of Alaska, the Atlanta child murderer, and Seattle's Green River killer, the case that nearly cost Douglas his life.

As the model for Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs, Douglas has confronted, interviewed, and studied scores of serial killers and assassins, including Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, and Ed Gein, who dressed himself in his victims' peeled skin. Using his uncanny ability to become both predator and prey, Douglas examines each crime scene, reliving both the killer's and the victim's actions in his mind, creating their profiles, describing their habits, and predicting their next moves.

This book was the basis on and is very similar to the recent show Mindhunter. John Douglas describes his background and introduction to the behavioral sciences as well as giving details on some of the cases he consulted on and criminals he interviewed.

it's an enjoyable and quick read and I enjoyed hearing more about cases I had heard of before and some I hadn't. I was surprised to see how close it was to the TV show wit the same name. Definitely recommended for crime buffs.

I binge-watched Mindhunter on Netflix in a weekend. Can't wait to read the book that the series was based on. It's great that true crime is having a moment right now. If you love stories about serial killers make sure to check out the podcast called My Favorite Murder.

"Mindhunter" is a must read book for anyone in investigations or criminal justice. John Douglas and his team took criminal science profiling from a concept to reality. We owe them a lot. It is the basis of investigations today. However, the art and science of investigations are so much more advanced today. It would be nice to see a sequel.

Great book, read it in the 90s. Is NOTHING like Criminal Minds. John Douglas traveled the country either alone or with his partner, Robert Ressler, not on a private jet with a team of 8 people. The two of them had 10, 20, 30 cases at all times. Interesting note, Douglas came down with viral encephalitis while in Seattle and almost died when here to consult on the then unknown Green River Killer. If you've seen the show, when Agent Ford uses certain vulgar words to relate to the killers, yep, that really happened. Enjoy.

David Fincher (House of Cards) and Charlize Theron's collaboration, Mind Hunter, is set to debut on Netflix in 2017. The book is centered around two FBI agents as they attempt to crack cases by interviewing serial killers.

For those of you who love the TV program "Criminal Minds", this book examines the roots of the FBI Behavioral Sciences Unit (BAU on the show). It will hook you from the very beginning. I didn't particularly like the author (John Douglas; a little to cocky and arrogant for me), but I appreciate what he and his team created. I thought a lot of the content on Criminal Minds was pure hogwash; turns out I was wrong. If you are even thinking about joining law enforcement, this is a must.
