While I always enjoy Ms. Grimes' motley crew of recurring characters, in this book, they seemed almost incidental to the story. The one-off characters were well drawn, entertaining, sympathetic in the case of the two children particularly, and recognizably English. The villain of the piece, however, seemed unfinished and hastily drawn, and the hold she had over the deceased seemed like it didn't fit either character.

I would still recommend the book to lovers of Grimes and of English mysteries. Just don't be surprised if you are left wanting a bit more than what you get with the ending.

I enjoyed the characterization in Grimes' earlier novels. Lately, Jury is stupid and totally uninteresting. Even the quirky ones are bland. What happened? Get tired of the crew you invented???
