Chief Inspector Kur Wallander investigates the deaths of three young celebrants after the Midsummer's Eve ritual.

Norton Pub
On Midsummer's Eve, three friends gather in a secluded meadow in Sweden. In the still-sun-lit northern night, they don costumes and begin to role play. But an uninvited guest soon brings their performance to a gruesome conclusion. His approach is careful; his aim is perfect. Three bullets, three corpses. The murderer then carefully photographs the grisly tableau. Meanwhile, the Ystad police station is experiencing a summer lull. Inspector Kurt Wallander is focusing on living healthier, but his peace of mind is shattered when a fellow officer is murdered. The police slowly realize how little they know about what is going on in their seemingly serene town. An unknown killer is on the loose, but their only lead is a photograph of three dead young people in costume. Forced to dig more deeply than he'd like into the personal life of one of his colleagues, Wallander's investigation uncovers something he could never have imagined. One Step Behind is the fifth book to appear in English in what the Los Angeles Times Book Review calls the "exquisite" Kurt Wallander series.

Well-done! This story has been made into a movie, also.

One of Mankell's talent is the way he uses his main character's foibles to create an empathetic workaholic detective who tries to solve violent crimes while his own life is missing obvious relationship needs. In this story, it's not obvious why innocent people are being killed - there is no connection, or is there?

Swedish thriller about a serial killer killing people he dislikes who are "happy". The author of the story writes about the disillusionment of the detective: his life as a policeman and the direction of the case. I think the story is a bit long in leading us into false leads; the author seems of be filling the pages just to do so. It is also heavy on the role society may have played in the creation of this madman and the reasoning behind the killing seems to be a bit seems flimsy. A bit long at the end. Couldn't wait for it to end. Would not recommend.

I enjoyed this mystery, One Step Behind, very much. i had watched a number of the television movies of Kurt Wallander stories on the PBS series, "Mystery". The selection of DVD's of Kurt Wallander is limited in the S.C.C. Library;but they are all really good stories - both the books and videos.

Wallander is a conflicted but brilliant Swedish homicide detective, who has to wrestle with complex issues in his own life even as he pursues the criminals he seeks.

Henning Mankell writes beautifully and the story flows along well. It does not get bogged down in the turmoil and angst that the title character deals with. Instead, Wallander's personal challenges effectively add drama and interest to the book..
