An insightful look into a film director's (likely Fellini's) world; full of pressures, decisions, insecurity, regret. The women he desires -- one for her brains, and one (at least) for her body; a dream girl, and a childhood memory of a beastly female neanderthal creature dancing the rumba... The scene with Guido (Mastroianni) escorting his father back into his grave left me speechless; I found that especially powerful, albeit grim. Also, the sequence where Guido weakly attempts to assume control of his chaotic bevvy of beauties by cracking a whip was quite amusing. And personally, I wouldn't have minded more screen time for the belladonna Claudia Cardinale. What. A. Knockout. Whew.

If you're feeling jaded and that movies are just a lot of populist, commercial time wasters, watch this and remember that movies can be a pure and beautiful art form all their own. This is film making at its very best. A perfect film. It could be nothing else.

"I'm putting everything into it. Even a tap dancing sailor."

I watched every Fellini movie as a young man. To see this one again reminds me of why I ever loved film in the first place. It got just about ever accolade the critics and press could possibly hand out.
O ... M ... G!
is this one of the best ever made!?
If you haven't seen a Fillini flick you really don't know what you're comparing anything else to.

"No, this guy couldn't do it. He wants to grab everything and devour it. He can't give up a single thing. He changes direction every day for fear of missing the right path." - Guido Anselmi

(At the train station) Carla: "How are you?" Guido Anselmi: "Not bad." Carla: "Someone here knows you?" Guido Anselmi: "I don't think so, but why did you bring all that luggage?" Carla: "It's only five suitcases. You know evening gowns take up so much room."

Guido Anselmi (Assessing three old men hoping to be cast in his film): "...They're not old enough." Bruno - il secondo segretario di produzione: "What? This one's ready to drop dead! Next time, I'll bring you three corpses. You wanted a pathetic type. Just look at him, and you start crying."
