Now Blaylock returns, along with mentor and aging gunslinger Jim Riley, but he has grown into a hard young man while searching for his son.
But Blaylock and Riley have some obstacles in their path. The first is the hardheaded and egomaniacal Captain E. T. Barnette - determined to open a trading post at Tanana Crossing, but unprepared for a winter in Alaska. When Blaylock agrees to hunt for the winter-stranded Barnette's party, he faces a lot more than he bargained for.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, President William McKinley is assassinated. His death is yet another wrinkle in the power struggle over the Isthmus of Panama - the locale of the planned Panama Canal. Whichever country builds and controls the canal will control the shipping lanes between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans - important for merchant ships, crucial for warships. But any outward play for the isthmus will be deemed an act of aggression. So certain interested parties hatch a plan to steal guns from Canada and smuggle them through Alaska down to the isthmus in order to bolster claims to control of the land - and only Nathan Blaylock can stop them.
Nathan Blaylo, the illegitimate son of Wyatt Earp, embarks on a journey to find his own son, but he is up against some formidable opposition and the harsh but incomparable beauty of the Alaskan tundra in 1901
