To try and write like Carver, and endless others, is an edifying task that begins with the assault of reading this book.

Carver's poems are a lot like his stories. Short, well-shaped, with often very quiet narratives. Devotees of his fiction will enjoy reading these poems, just a few at a time. With this full collection of his poems, readers can pick and choose their way along in time and follow Carver's poems through his career. He'll never be an important voice in American poetry, but his place in modern literary history is secure; these poems are pleasant and a nice companion to his fiction.
