"Serious" in this volume (first edition: 1995) means a cyclist seriously interested in racing, possibly even with Tour de France ambitions. 'Hard-core Training," "The Nutritional Edge," "Planning," and 'Racing" the titles of the four sections, suggest the author's approach. However, non-racing bicycle enthusiasts will find much here that is interesting and useful in their own endeavors. Chapters on lactate threshold, avoiding injury, after ride recovery, overtraining, and the biomechanics of position and pedaling will help any rider who wants to prepare for the next riding season. The author (Phd) was a professor and director of the exercise science program at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Annotation (c) Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
