This is a 1986 French drama directed by Claude Berri, based on a novel by Marcel Pagnol.
This film is PART 1 and Part 2 is titled as "Manon des Sources."
The film takes place in rural Provence, where two local farmers scheme to trick a newcomer out of his newly inherited property.
Yves Montand plays as César Soubeyran, who is the proud patriarch of a dying family, and his only known relative is his nephew Ugolin.
Eager to restore his family's position, he manipulates his nephew to do his bidding.
Ugolin is a rat-faced sub-intelligent nephew, but he is somewhat more conscientious than his uncle.
Nevertheless, he is persuaded to carry through with the diabolical plan.
Although known as a definitive French masterpiece, this film disappointed me as a rather uninteresting, monotonous and malicious story.
By the way, this DVD (3 1383 08399 8172) has no English subtitles.

The Part 2 - Sources de Manon is very good (although not as that good as Part 1), and its last scene is so shocking.
And the music scores! From Verdi, and the opera's title tells everything...

I see that the part 2 is on youtube; maybe this one too, which would have saved me rushing to watch it the day the DVD was due back at OPL! Really good film! I look forward to part 2.

An excellent pair of movies about a pair of greedy land owners who visited a lot of pain on the neighbor to cheat him out of his life-dream farm. And once they've done it, flip the CD over and see how it comes back to bite them. A village tacitly watches and also pays a price. A satisfying, almost Shakespearean plot performed magnificently.

Must See - Jean de Forette (1986) 120 min [Foreign - French]. Beautiful film to be seen with the sequel "Manon des Sources (1986)". I saw this one when it first came out and loved it.

One of the greatest epics to ever come out of France. Also check out Little Dorrit Part I and II (UK), Traffik (UK), and I Claudius (UK)

A tale of unjust hardship. You should really watch its sequel Manon des Sources afterwards to appreciate their reversed symmetry.

Jean de Florette and the sequel, Manon des Sources (Manon of the Spring) comprise one of the best movies ever made. The story, told in two parts, is utterly human: funny, painful, unpredictable, and ultimately devastating. But incredibly rewarding. I love this film.
