Provincial dreamer Emma Bovary is more intelligent and self-aware, and therefore more tragic than the impression I get of her from the book -- but maybe that's inevitable when you cast a cool, powerful actress like Isabelle Huppert. Claude Chabrol is the ideal director for this kind of story, but whoever chose the music should have been booted. When it isn't inappropriate to the mood, it sounds like selections from 20 Classical Favourites: price $12.99. Please note: this version is in French only, no subtitles, which is a shame, because it is the best version overall. Surely there's a newer or Criterion release of this film.
