The basis for the blockbuster motion picture directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Shutter Island by New York Times bestselling author Dennis Lehane is a gripping and atmospheric psychological thriller where nothing is quite what it seems. The New York Times calls Shutter Island, “Startlingly original.” The Washington Post raves, “Brilliantly conceived and executed.” A masterwork of suspense and surprise from the author of Mystic River and Gone, Baby, Gone, Shutter Island carries the reader into a nightmare world of madness, mind control, and CIA Cold War paranoia and is unlike anything you’ve ever read before.

Add a CommentAn asylum for the criminally insane, a missing patient, a U. S. Marshall, and a "dark and stormy night" add up to heart-pounding suspense.
Excellent. Secret government conspiracy. Paranoia. Who dunnit? Addictive gruesome fun. World Gone Mad, y'all
Well written and suspenseful. I can usually see "twists" coming a mile away but did not predict this one.
Very well crafted. Even if I saw the movie (twice), the intrigue was still there and kept me on my toes till the very end.
Haven't seen the movie, but this was pretty good. There's not much I can say without spoiling the plot, but if you like thrills and twists this is worth a try.
The twists and turns in this novel will leave you intrigued and amazed as well as keenly aware that things may not always be what they seem.
I love Dennis Lehane, but I found this book boring and stopped at page 28. Too wordy.
Even though the book (and the movie) have been around a while, I wasn't familiar with the story - or even this author - so I got to experience the great pleasure of being caught completely by surprise by the ending. This was the real fun of the book: the pages through which my mind was in denial, the pages when I was baffled about what to believe and the pages that had me reliving the whole story to fit the pieces together from a completely different perspective. Delicious.
A well constructed story from an excellent author. Fast paced and interesting with many plot turns. Definitely worth reading.
This book blew me away! There were multiple plot twists! Don't read about the book in Amazon! There is always a clown that gives away key aspects of the book! I didn't see any of this coming...I was stunned and speechlees when I finished the book. I loved it! Mystic River is very good, too!
