Earth and its society have been changed irrevocably in the aftermath of Ender Wiggin's victory over the Formics. No longer unified by an alien enemy, nations are rising again and seeking to control the skills and loyalty of the children from the Battle School. Peter Wiggin, Ender's older, more ruthless brother, sees that any hope for the future of Earth lies in restoring a sense of unity and purpose, and he has an irresistible call on the loyalty of Earth's young warriors.

This book is super sexist. Petra used to be such a strong awesome character and in this one he writes her with her sole goal being to have Bean's babies. No woman lives only to have another man's babies. We might want kids, but the reasoning behind it isn't just to continue his line. It's because you want to raise kids together. And this especially annoyed me because it isn't consistent with her character, she doesn't live for any man. She lives for herself. She was a strong independent female and then Orson had to go and mess that up.

I enjoyed this book, it was at slow paced, and wasn’t immersive to me, but it was interesting. It included politics and a character was genetically altered, making this story different than most others. As part of a series, it is also interesting to see how this fits in with all the other stories.

Orson Scott Card’s Shadow Puppets (2002) – Ender Shadow Series Book 3 - continues Bean’s story. Excellent book! Doctor-at-Bass! Taylor A.
