I'm really disappointed in this movie. They totally took out several main characters (e.g. the Mayleighs, Dr. Losborne, Mr. Monks, etc.) and they avoided all talk of Oliver's mother and his past!!!! Sad!!!! I give them 3 stars for the choices of cast (specifically Fagin, Bill, Nancy, the Dogder, and Oliver) but, overall, pretty disappointing.

Is there a negative rating for this waste of time? For one it didn't even stick to the story, they screwed with the plot, and squashed it into a condensed watered down version. The book was faster paced than this.Go read the unabridged Oliver Twist novel, then come and watch the movie, and decide for yourself. I'd rather watch a good action flick any day.

Although I'm a diehard fan of the '48 David Lean version, I thoroughly enjoyed this underrated Polanski interpretation. Brilliant atmosphere, grime and all. I felt the cast was superb: Ben Kingsley made a delightfully grotesque Fagin; Jamie Foreman oozed evil as Bill Sykes; Leanne Rowe as the big-hearted (and bosomed) Nancy; I would've liked to have seen more of Ian McNeice (of Doc Martin); and young Barney Clark was perfect as the infamous misfortunate wretch. I think Dickens would approve. FIVE STARS.
