Garbo is mesmerizing as the dancer-turned-German secret agent in a wartime Paris seething with secrets and betrayal. With the world at war, love was her weapon. The only men she couldn' t seduce were the 12 in the firing squad that ended her life.

This was very loosely based on the real life of Mata Hari, an exotic dancer, who may or may not have actually been involved in espionage. This is probably one of Greta Garbo's best sound films.

Mata Hari was a beautiful woman. I just couldn’t buy Garbo in the role. The movie didn’t engage me at all.

This is a 1931 American drama loosely based on the life of Mata Hari, an exotic dancer-courtesan executed for espionage during World War I.
Greta Garbo plays the title role.
After all, Mata Hari is sentenced to death.
She writes to her lover, Rosanoff, telling him that she cannot see him for a while as she has to go to a sanatorium for her health.
Shortly before her execution, Rosanoff, now a blind man because of the plane accident, is brought to her.
The jailor and the attending nuns all maintain the pretense that they are in a sanatorium.
Rosanoff tells Mata Hari that he will likely see again.
Then she is taken away to face the firing squad.
Altough this is a fictional ending, it certainly works as a tear jerker.
This is probably the reason Garbo has popularized the legend of Mata Hari.
