This classic action-packed comic describes a dark future dystopian world where rival gangs of reckless youths prowl the streets at night.

Akira, written by Katsuhiro Otomo, is a graphic novel that takes place in the year 2019 in Tokyo. This action sci-fi book views Tokyo as many different groups such as the government, revolutionaries, gangs, and secret scientific project organizations are involved in something called “Akira”. The first volume follows a young boy named Kaneda and his biker gang as they deal with drugs and live an exciting and lawless lifestyle. They live life with no worries, but are soon drawn into the large conflict involving “Akira”. The gang encounters a young boy with the face of an old man that has psychological powers. Kaneda must figure out what he is dealing with, and what is going on. He teams up with an anti-government organization, and has to determine what he must do to gain the upper hand against the other groups. The adventurous story is developed throughout six different volumes, and is read from left to right.

I found that the first novel in this series of six is an action packed story that completes the task of developing the story for the future novels. The book starts out very confusing and throws the reader into the story without much backstory. This immerses the reader right from the start, and I feel like it was the best approach for this type of story despite how disorienting it was in the beginning. Next, the novel develops the characters that it needs to, but doesn’t touch on many of the side characters. This lead to me becoming very confused, especially at the start, when the characters referenced other characters that I had barely gotten to know. Furthermore, even the characters didn’t reveal much of the plot as the main character didn’t know what was happening. Despite how confusing the story was, once everything was set in place and the reader understands what was happening, the story becomes very immersive and exciting. This first volume uses a lot of its contents to develop the story and help the reader get to this point, mostly for the further volumes. Overall, I would say that this volume is not amazing, but definitely a great stepping stone to lead into the rest of the story and would recommend it to anyone interested in the plot.

Having seen the animation film I did not get much out of this inch-thick comic book. So I wound up skipping it. But if you are a fan of manga and Akira, you may enjoy thumbing through it.

one of the very best and important mangas, the story, climax, cliff hangers, characters and just the idea of the story is genius. Any one who loves a great story, or lives manga highly recommend it.
