Running with scissors is the true story of a boy whose mother (a poet with delusions of Anne Sexton) gave him away to be raised by her unorthodox psychiatrist who bore a striking resemblance to Santa Claus. At the age of twelve, Burroughs found himself amidst Victorian squalor living with the doctor's bizarre family, and befriending a pedophile who resided in the backyard shed. The story of an outlaw childhood where rules were unheard of, and the Christmas tree stayed up all year round, where Valium was consumed like candy and if things got dull an electroshock-therapy machine could provide entertainment. The funny, harrowing and bestselling account of an ordinary boy's survival under the most extraordinary circumstances.

Another life story of a dysfunctional family life, interesting, but not edifying, I thought the popularity of the book would have made it worth my time. If this is on your “to read list” it can be moved to a lower priority.

I agree with what others have said: not everyone will find this as enthralling and hilarious as I did. If the events as they are told really happened there should be many pending lawsuits! I'm shocked that Augusten was able to become a well established writer in spite of his troubled upbringing. A memoir like no other - you have to read it and decide for yourself.

I don't know if I can recommend this book because I'm not sure if I liked it. It's not for everyone. It's a weird and sad subject (a completely messed up childhood) but the author has a really dark sense of humor about it so I found parts of it to be hilarious. Approach with caution.

Listened to 1 1/2 cd's and couldn't get into it. Odd, sad, weird.

This is among the strangest, hilarious, original and poignant books I have ever read. Thouroughly engaging, brilliantly read and absolutely marvelous. I cannot recommend it enough. It is a novel that will be either loved or misunderstood my the reader so be fairwarned: it is not for everybody.

Is there a rating system for books - like movies have? I enjoyed the book but I won't want my kid (or mother) to read it.
