Wonderful movie that has some of the best fantasy sequences I have ever seen on film. The last scenes of the film should be seen by any film fan. The movie shows a true depiction of Sicilian families immigration to America. I thought we took all who wanted to enter the United States, but the movie shows that we did have admittance tests to enter the United States at the time the movie depicts. A real eye opening film that allows us to see the sacrifices these Sicilian families were able to make to enter the United States. It should make all their ancestor proud!

“Golden Door depicts rural, illiterate, penniless Italian peasants choosing to escape the poverty of the Old World by emigrating to the New World around 1900. It is probably the most realistic depiction of the culture shock that these peasants go through on their long ocean voyage and their stay at Ellis Island as the American authorities go through an experimental process to determine if they would be suitable persons for America. Martin Scorsese introduces the movie and says that the various Italian dialects are quite representative of what he remembers as a child in the various Italian immigrant neighborhoods of New York City and the culture seems to be accurate as he remembers it.

A surprisingly good little movie. Movies often talk about immigrants coming to North America but the actual crossing is seldom depicted. Very interesting-worth the watch. -English or French sub-titles.

Well worth seeing, with its insights into Sicilian myth and magic. What a culture shock from Sicily to Ellis Island. What a voyage in time and mind across the wild Atlantic. Despite the brilliance of much in this film, I only give it 3 stars. Something fell short of the memorable film it could have been.
