In a world of political power and magic, and of Gods and mortals, a courtesan and trained assassin who calls herself "Green" finds intrigue and adventure, and many enemies, in the duke's city of Copper Downs.
McMillan Palgrave
She was born in poverty, in a dusty village under the equatorial sun. She does not remember her mother, she does not remember her own name—her earliest clear memory is of the day her father sold her to the tall pale man. In the Court of the Pomegranate Tree, where she was taught the ways of a courtesan…and the skills of an assassin…she was named Emerald, the precious jewel of the Undying Duke’s collection of beauties.
She calls herself Green.
The world she inhabits is one of political power and magic, where Gods meddle in the affairs of mortals. At the center of it is the immortal Duke’s city of Copper Downs, which controls all the trade on the Storm Sea. Green has made many enemies, and some secret friends, and she has become a very dangerous woman indeed.
Acclaimed author Jay Lake has created a remarkable character in Green, and evokes a remarkable world in this novel. Green and her struggle to survive and find her own past will live in the reader’s mind for a long time after closing the book.

Add a CommentStart a great fantasy series. Portland author I wish he'd had the time to write more.
Started off very well: a little girl is sold by her poor father and taken across the sea to be trained in cruel isolation to be a high-class lady/courtesan for a mysterious Duke. She secretly rages against her captivity and vows to escape and end child trafficking. As it turns out, two of her keepers seem to have their own rather different plans for her... But then the author seems to lose the threads of the story and starts to wander. I hope the author improves, because the beginning had such promise!
I would not consider the sexual content to be particularly explicit, but there are elements that some may find either offensive or disturbing and should be cautioned. The general attitude toward sexuality in the book is incredibly uninhibited and also contains darker elements of "bdsm" at times. The author actually does quite a good job of having these attitudes be cohesive and consistent throughout the environment of the novel, not seeming to have included them for shock value. However this almost nonchalant portrayal, of what in reality can be a very intense and personal form of sexual awareness, lacks a depth of understanding in the presentation that I feel would help some readers better reconcile with what can be confusing and disturbing content. Other than that it was an interesting story.
