While some commenters have mentioned the main character's stupidity in getting into this situation. I would argue that this film is about a woman in deep mourning who is largely numb closed out of the normal world, who comes to herself by being exposed to the suffering of others and some of the transcendental power of Aung San Suu Kyi in overcoming that suffering. The movie is flawed and some of Arquette's line readings feel off but her facial reactions are beautiful and intuitively pull me into this fascinating and truly lovely film. This film shows the potential that Arquette delivers in Boyhood.

This could have been an excellent movie with the right actors and director. Good story, but the rest was terrible.

Mentions the 8888 uprising and Aung San Suu Kyi 1991 Nobel Peace Prize Winner and Democracy Leader. Both rarely covered in mainstrean US news.

This movie was entertaining but not one of my favorite for this year. “Not too bad---good performance”.

A slow story about an American stuck in Burma. A frustraitng piece to watch. Patricia Arquette is not what you call a strong leading lady. She is very wooden. Sometimes you just what to slap some sense into her. Who goes to a foreign country without researching some of the customs first. Who has the stupidity to argue with mlitary in a foriegn country. Why would she go into the country alone with a strange guy she meet at a market. Maybe she had a suicide wish because of what happened to her family but it was not explained as that. This movie just shows that all Americans are stupid when they travel with no respect for the customs and laws of foreign countries they visit. Is that why a lot of people despise Americans in their country.
