sad commentary on the senseless destruction of war as a mother searches in vain for her lost son, overlaid with middle east politics.

This is another well-directed, well-acted film on the senselessness of war and the suffering endured by innocent civilians. It makes me feel very lucky to be living in a peaceful country and spared this suffering but at the same time, sorrowful for those affected, in this case civilians in Lebanon caught in the devastation caused by Israeli bombing. Unrelenting movie with real-time film footage of Israel's bombing of Lebanon mixed in with high-production footage (apparently) taken for this film of the destruction after the Israeli attacks. The story is secondary to the goal of showing the devastation, and I wish it had been integrated better -- as a result, the movie comes off more as a documentary of the attacks and their immediate results (death, trauma, collapse of buildings/bridges/telephone lines/infrastructure) than as a story. The funniest scene is when Tony talks to the Israeli snipers whom he cannot see but whom he assumes are there -- he must abandon his car and expects they will take it, so he wants them to treat the car well because it's a good model and make and he's put a lot into it. The saddest scenes are when Zeina is grieving and when the children explain what happened to them. The style of the film is "realism."

Good - Under the Bombs (2007) [Foreign - Arabic] 98 min. Powerful drama about a mother trying to find her little boy in war-torn southern Lebanon during the 2006 Israeli-Lebanon conflict. Great acting make this extremely believable. These type of films continue to demonstrate how crazy the world is in the sense that we still keep doing this to each other day in and day out.
