John Carpenter is one of my favorite directors. When I first saw this movie in 1988, I thought it was campy and cheesy, but after seeing it again a few days ago, I was surprised by all the eye-opening social parallels we are facing today, so much so that this movie seems almost like a prophecy for the modern day.

Interesting but not the greatest. This movie had potential to be better though.

As relevant (and disturbing) today as when it came out in 1988, when I first watched it.

" They live, we sleep ". It might seem like a silly action/sci-fi B-Movie from the 80's, but John Carpenter slyly subverts the genre with a radical critique of those who truly wield power in the USA. As this film was a return to low-budget filmmaking for Carpenter, he utilized those factors in his favor, mixing goofiness with a profundity that would pass over most viewers heads. The 5 minute fight scene is a good indicator whether you'll " get it ".
There are some amazingly perceptive comments made by the underground radio broadcaster in the film ( keep your ears tuned ). It's a fun and insightful film that still holds up.

Yeah, it's cheesy, but it's also one of the best films ever made about ideology.

'They Live' is a brilliant science fiction film about aliens masquerading as humans who have occupied positions of wealth and power in society to exploit humans. They are subtly influencing humans to do their bidding while having them believe that it is for their own good. There is no way to identify the aliens except through special sunglasses. Ironically, the top "1%" elite of our society might be doing this job much better than any aliens ever could and you don't need any special sunglasses to notice this.

Roddy Piper was one of my favorite wrestlers growing up. I have to say that this movie is probably the only movie I actually enjoy that starred a wrestler. I mean, The Rock has some movies that are almost OK, but for crying out loud he takes himself way too darn seriously, and he fails miserably. Piper's performance here is far more convincing. Lots of inside jokes and B movie goofiness in this flick; it doesn't take itself too seriously and yet that is what makes this film so successful. It's all about the execution. This movie is probably my second favorite John Carpenter flick, after The Thing.

Great 80's movie: Blu-Blocker sun glasses, mullets and A-Team shooting.
