It's often difficult to review multi-artist collaboration albums such as these because the quality varies so widely from song to song. A really important and really subjective question has to get asked: whether or not the truly talented work drowns out the mediocrity and merits giving the overall release a positive review. Personally, I think that there are a lot of great highlights here.
Pink is one of the best female artists out there who can take pop music and try to turn it into something meaningful. "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" is catchy, energetic, and all around superb. Ryan Star's emotional "Stay Awhile" and Usher's defiant "Numb" both stand out for having that same vibe. Psy's "Gangnam Style" is nonsensical and weird in a fun way. Little Big Town's "Pontoon" is exactly the kind of upbeat pop country that's gotten beaten into the ground by the music industry lately, yet it still works.
On the negative side, Flo Rida's "Whistle" seems to assault the listener with its raw stupidity. "Talented with your lips, like you blew out candles"? Really, Rida? Even accidentally sitting next to a candle blows it out. As well, Maroon 5 attempts at yodeling (at least, that's what I interpret that ugly "coo-coo-achoo" sound as being) in "One More Night" is gag-inducing. Besides those two particular low points, several songs are more forgettable than anything else. For example, pop group Karmin tries to turn Nirvana's grunge into shiny dance music with "Hello", and the results wind up being curiously boring instead of either irritating or interesting.
Overall, this album is worth listening to. The high points are wonderful. However, don't be surprised if you end up deleting four or more tracks of it when time goes on.
Not my type of music. There were 2 songs on this CD that I would EVER care to listen to again.
GOOD collection of 20 cuts of a broad variety of popular music cuts from 2012. Naturally, few people will enjoy all of them because of the diversity, but for people like me who don't listen to the radio, it is a good way to somewhat keep up on popular music.
I particularly enjoyed Gangnam Style and a couple others, but everyone's tastes are different.
Really bad music. Sorry everyone but popular pop music is terrible.
If this is what they call music, they need a serious management change over there :-)
