It must be very awkward to try to compile a book on such large, diverse, changing, and taste-laden a topic as literature. I was disagreeing with it and being disappointed by it regularly (Naipaul is mentioned once! Hamvas, Krudy, and others not mentioned at all!) The editors effectively evade these issues in the introductory remarks. They seem to put a lot of stock in prizes and their winners. I found it helpful in re-familiarizing myself with "-isms" and in exposing me to titles that I would never have thought of and can now consider to put onto my reading list.
