Shot 'em if you've got 'em. I quickly lost interest in this.

Not sure if this Western is a black comedy or a version of "Hang 'Em High" in disguise. All the characters are a bit off: a Mexico-bound drifter with his very-clever dog, the conflicted Marshall/sheriff with his bully son, a preacher hell bent to do the Lord's work, two eerie pale-skinned manipulative teenage sisters, and three not-so-bright sidekicks of the Marshall. Conclusion is it is both a pretty good comedy and revenge-driven Western.

The plot? Predictable to beat the band, right down to the Grace Kelly ending you know is coming. The screenplay? A parade of visual clichés accompanied by dialogue that 'cringe-worthy' does not begin to describe. How this film-school project ever got produced is the true mystery here. But there is one positive element (two, if you count the cute dog): the script is so painful that its über-badness allows John Travolta to show just how good an actor he is to get through it. On second thought: if you take away the dog, it gets zero stars.

John Wick all over again...

I really liked Travolta's character in this tale. Slow start, but turns into a suspenseful shoot-em-up action western. I recommend to adult audience.

This started off half decently but by the end I was a little bored- too bad as it could have been a good little Western.

Westerns have been making an over-due comeback -- this with Ethan Hawk taking yet another interesting & diverse role as he tends to do, and for this alone it is worth seeing. IMO the remakes of True Grit and The Magnificent Seven were substantial modern installments -- this piece is wrought with action, darkness, & edginess, perhaps containing more of a dramatic presence than Grit or Mag7, and it definitely stands to be put beside these as modern Westerns. This feels similar to some of the Clint Eastwood westerns.

Great western... awesome Travolta

Low key western finds a drifter getting mixed up with a small town, an obnoxious type, and the stalwart marshall who wants him out. Its a bit slow to begin, but it quickly builds up to a terrific showdown in this simple and satisfying revenge western. Ethan Hawke is really good and its one of Travolta's better performances as of late.

Do you know what they call this place? Hmm? They call it... "Valley of violence."
He shouldn't have threatened me or my dog. A man can only take so much.
You know what Cathy used to say one of the greatest things about Mexico was? Nobody speaks any English.
When I first met Cathy, I couldn't get three words out of her. You know, she only spoke if she had something meaningful to say. But this one... Shxt. She'd speak every time she wasn't taking a breath.
These people need a leader. Now, they don't always like it, but they can't survive without it. Now you oughta remember that, soldier. Now, come on.
-Leaders are chosen, marshal. You ain't given nobody a choice.
There is no denying that the two of you are related. You truly are pathetic. Both of you.
Now I'm sorry for the hand you've been dealt, truly. I am. But I can't stay here and help you bury your father and run you off to someplace better. I'm not the man you see in your head.

The preacher, hell bent to do the Lord's work P1 of 2:

See, do you believe in god, my son? Ah, well, me and this mule here, we do the lord's work in traveling all across this land preaching the good word. And over that hill there down into the valley is the town of Denton. That's our next stop. You familiar? Ah, let me give you a little insight into our situation. Denton is a town that is run by sinners. Just like many of the others that we visited. No church, no religion left to speak of. Many of its residents have... They've lost their way. So you see, traveler, if I cannot get this goddamn mule over that goddamn hill, then I cannot heal those poor souls with the gospel of our lord Jesus Christ, praise his name. I've been praying, and I've been praying all day for the lord to heal my troubles.

The preacher, hell bent to do the Lord's work P2 of 2:

I've asked him, and I know that he wants me to help those people. I know that he wants me to save those that need to be saved, especially the women. They are ripe with sin.
So I asked the lord, I said "do not forsake them, and do not forsake me. Send me someone to help get over that hill." Sure enough, he answered my prayers. Now, I'm afraid I'm gonna be needin' that horse of yours.
Be quiet! Or you'll be speaking to your lord directly.
I'm not a thief, but I am a killer. And I've killed better men than some drunk
wanderin' around pretending to preach the word of god.
The devil is waiting for men like you. He's waiting!
-Well, if the devil's looking for me, you can tell him I'm headed to Mexico. He can meet me there.
