I have to agree with the negative reviews here. It is the first Iranian horror movie that I have seen (and likely the first made), but it lacks a lot when it comes to horror. It's true that there are moments of "scariness" but they are too far and too short to compel me. What I think this film could have done was capture early on and keep it going, make that story arc, and give you a well-deserved, proper climax. This movie, unfortunately, was far too slow for a horror movie, and the characters, particularly the little girl, were annoying.

The action in this movie is a little slow and there is not much action until near the end of the movie. There are a feel spooky moments but not enough to carry the movie along. SPOILER ALERT: The biggest complaint i have is that the end of the movie is something they should have done far earlier if they had any brains. The characters are not very likable and it is very hard to feel sympathy for them. Watch "lights out", if you want to see a creepy horror film that is much more interesting and compelling plot wise.

Very different type of ghost story. Tension is built over the whole movie. Don't have to give too much detail. Just watch it and feel the hairs in the back of your neck rise and tingle.

I don't usually watch horror movies. But I was curious about this one cuz of all the accolades it received and cuz it's set in Tehran during the Iran/Iraq war. I was curious about the extent to which the Djinns were figurative, metaphors for the evils of war. And I was curious about how the horror-movie formula could work in a different culture.

The 'reality' of the Djinns was handled intelligently. They were given an 'undeniable' reality but their figurative nature was also explored. That is, the mother came to 'understand' that they were 'real' but the book she read, which she shares with us, as it were, explores the figurative nature of Djinns.

Concerning the horror-movie formula in a foreign culture, well, the mother was a student of western medicine; she was a westerner; a scientist. So it wasn't much different in that regard.

An interesting film, I'd say. On the same sort of level as The Omen, perhaps. Definitely worth seeing if you're interested in horror films.

Despite its high score on Rottentomatoes and its accolades for being one of the first (or first) Iranian horror film, Under the Shadow is a half baked mess of a film. It doesn't have enough material for a movie, and easily could have been a 5 minute short. Its mostly family bickering and filler, and there is one decent scare at the end. Most of it is a lot of laughable moments and bad CGI that sort of deflates the whole experience, so Under the Shadow is one you can skip.
