Hawkman's an awesome character who, in some ways, has never really gotten his due. In this alternate history, he's given a full backstory that's smart, complex, and surprisingly moving. Katar Hol, a highborn son of an influential scientist, becomes a hero for all - but not without a lot of trouble along the way. Thanagar is portrayed in vivid detail as a plausible alien world with very real problems. If they ever make a Hawkman movie, this book would be a great template for it.

Really interesting to see an early-ish post-"Crisis on infinite earths" series I did not think DC would see as worth releasing in a compilation. The whole vibe of the story goes with how stark Thanagarian ("hawk-people") society can be and it reminded me very tangentially of old "Metal hurlant" stories. Really nice as an example of a DC character who isn't usually as fleshed out as much being in a sci-fi story that almost feels "stand alone" from regular DC continuity even the sci-fi of the Green Lanterns series,as different as it was during the late 80's to early 90's.

Pretty good. A reprint of a story released several years ago and probably not included in mainstream Hawkman mythos but interesting nevertheless.
