I loved the actors and the storyline. I like the transition from adolescence to teens, but not like the "adult" phase. It was like it was an afterthought of the movie and I was quite disappointed. There was something lackluster about this movie and I just cant put my finger on it. Maybe it was the directing, maybe it was something else. Overall, I enjoyed this.

This is a film to watch again if I am ever feeling sorry for myself. A beautiful, thought-provoking story that deepens my gratitude for kindness. As blue as I get, I may never be as blue as that boy in the moonlight.

Something different - a film about people of a very different social-economic background - I doubt that I would ever run into them and get to know them - which is a wonderful thing about great films - you get to live other folks lives, and perhaps understand a little more what they go though.

I would call this an art film. Despite Brad Pitt executive producing it, this film is a raw beautiful masterpiece that benefits from a second viewing (if you dare). In essence this film is about how loneliness became a black boy's coping mechanism and how it hindered his surrender to love in adulthood. Chiron, the protagonist is beaten up by classmates and life in Florida projects. He keeps his head stooped, the alienation tightening around him whether it's his crack head mother, derelict father, or his adult friend who by proxy sells Chiron's mother drugs. Years later Chiron himself lives hard but upon a reunion moves past the walls he built around him. Broken hearts along with family and community disintegration is not an entertaining way to spend an evening, but this film (w/o qualifying why I believe it's accurate) is a story no bumper sticker, yard sign or sports player is willing to address. However Moonlight also shows us hope and forgiveness. Hope and forgiveness are always in the best of stories.

A nuanced, phenomenal masterpiece, deeply emotional with captivating performances.

I liked the film but was expecting more due to the awards it received. It did not hit me with an emotional impact like Hacksaw Ridge or Manchester By the Sea, other nominated films.

Certainly a well done movie but this is another "human condition" story. My complaint is that i did not walk away feeling entertained.

The old Christian hymn goes, 'I love to tell the story of Jesus and his love'. There's just a natural appeal to telling a story. Maybe we are at the apex of moment when some are empowered to tell their story. An absent black father, a drug addicted prostituting mother, a drug dealing mentor and his attractive girl friend, school bullies: our hero is negotiating all these while in a state of confusion regarding his sexuality. Three periods of his life require different actors for the lead role. There doesn't seem to be much ventured here. Only reading of it in a related piece did it come to me this was an all black cast. Then I think I had to agree, not one white face. If this is what you've got, do you really have a problem with separate but equal? Highly awarded, almost universally well received; for me: claustrophobic and overwrought. Christians sometimes speak of happy Danes and sad Danes. Rather than upper users this might be a better fit for downer fans, depending on the assessment of the resolution.

Tons of quotes in IMDb already but this one was unexpected and shocking:

You the only man that's ever touched me. You're the only one. I haven't really touched anyone since.

“I was a wild little shortie, man. Just like you. Running around with no shoes on, the moon was out. This one time, I run by this old lady. I was running, howling. Kinda a fool, boy. This old lady, she stopped me. She said, “Running around, catching a lot of light. In moonlight, black boys look blue. You're blue. That's what I’m gonna call you: ‘Blue’.”
“Is your name 'Blue’?”
“Nah. At some point, you gotta decide for yourself who you’re going to be. Can’t let nobody make that decision for you.”
