After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter's murder case, Mildred Hayes makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby, the town's revered chief of police. When his second-in-command Officer Dixon, an immature mama's boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing's law enforcement is only exacerbated.

I liked this movie and the woman's determination. Though I don't like the man being burned or the type of person that man was. In the end she does get some answers. I could relate to this film partly because of what I've been through in my own life. Though I don't know that anyone has set any billboards out for me when I've gone missing. Then again I'm still alive.

After her daughter was viciously and cruelly murdered, mother Mildred Hayes decides to seek justice for herself. After seven months of no leads or arrests, she begins putting up billboards within her town as a way of mocking the police force for their lack of discoveries and follow-ups. This causes fury in the hearts of the policemen, however, Mildred has no problems with irritating a few cops. This charming crime and drama film tells the story that may hit home to many who have dealt with police and a lack of action. The movie allowed many of the actors to reach their full potential through their characters and the storyline was profound as well. I would rate this film 5/5 stars.

This won an award? Really? Mildly entertaining but not worth all the hype.

The two reviews below nailed it- I honestly can't understand the praise this film has been receiving.

To me the most overrated film of the year. Francis is great naturally. The story and direction is a complete mess. The themes end up saying nothing. This tries so hard to be quirky and yet meaningful but falls so short it is ridiculous. The scenes with the voice over by a character that has died is one of the most absurd, false Hallmark drivel I have seen in a film in years. The look at bitterness and anger of the two main characters ends up being such a shallow one. Same with examining prejudice. All the characters in this film are quirky and layered with some negative qualities other than ALL the black characters. They are all presented as cardboard, perfect people. How can this guy say anything about race when he can't even flesh out the non-white characters in this film? His look at anger and need to be quirky and funny ends up losing any theme of any depth. A film with moments that is ends up being an unbelievable hollow mess.

For the first hour this item seems like it could be a slightly amusing cross between Fargo and Twin Peaks (either version.) At that point, the totally inappropriate director, Martin McDonagh, shows that he is one of the vilest hacks in the movie industry, pouring on the bathos and the idiotic premises like there is no tomorrow. There is absolutely nothing that can then save it from the hell of pretension mashed together with incompetent acting. If Woody Harrelson had done a reprise of his "Natural Born Killers", there would have been a slight chance for redemption. As it is, put this one on the list of movies to be burned in the trash dumpster.

Hilarious & wonderful film with enough twists, turns & detours to keep the viewer engaged. Very important messages subtly delivered. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Bonus short film in the Extras on the dvd version is Six Shooter starring the never-disappointing Brendan Gleeson. Other great movies with him are In Bruges (2008) and The Guard (2011) also available from the library. Enjoy!

I was absolutely amazed with this film, beginning to end. You can certainly tell that Martin McDonagh is a talented playwright and the story unravels as both a Southern gothic drama and a dark Irish play. The cast was extremely strong all around, McDormand, Harrelson, Rockwell, and Dinklage. Don't miss the short film, Six Shooter, which is accessible in the EXTRAS option on the dvd menu, the pairing is excellent.

Always a fan of Francis McDormand, the various Oscar nominations while wonderful, are somewhat baffling. When compared to her roles in "Fargo" or others, this one pales in comparison. Overall the performances are top notch though I find the story slow and predictable. Small town violence trumps computer generated though I'm not a fan of its use to engage the audience or as a mechanism to add story elements. I suspect most will disagree, but like all art, its each to their own.

I go somewhere between a 3 and 4 star because there really are beautiful things about this movie, but the complaints that some people have had are fair. I mean, aside from the too many cuss words complaints, cause that has no bearing on how I feel about a movie, I am after-all, part of the Tarantino generation. Anyway, McDormand is amazing per usual, and Rockwell was good except his role was kind of weak and I don't think it afforded him the room to showcase his skills as an actor. I mean, his character did the quickest, least explained, roundabout. I suppose someone could say it was Harrelson's belief in him that motivated the change, but people have believed in me before and I'm still a total mess. Speaking of Harrelson, he was wonderful as well but his wife, portrayed by Abby Cornish was so flat. I don't even want to start about his letter to her, like if my husband wrote me that letter the rest of my life would feel so empty. I have more to say...but I suppose I'll take a break.

Real-life story of the father who inspired the Oscar-nominated film Three Billboards with his messages to the 'corrupt' police who 'botched' the case of his raped and strangled daughter (and it's not in Missouri)

Lyrics to the "Last Rose Of Summer":
'Tis the last rose of summer left blooming alone
All her lovely companions are faded and gone
No flower of her kindred, no rosebud is nigh
To reflect back her blushes and give sigh for sigh

I'll not leave thee, thou lone one, to pine on the stem
Since the lovely are sleeping, go sleep thou with them
Thus kindly I scatter thy leaves o'er the bed
Where thy mates of the garden lie scentless and dead

So soon may I follow when friendships decay
And from love's shining circle the gems drop away
When true hearts lie withered and fond ones are flown
Oh who would inhabit this bleak world alone?
This bleak world alone
