"When the body of a woman--who apparently died in childbirth--is discovered, Parker is hired to track down both her identity and her missing child. In the beautiful Maine woods, a partly preserved body is discovered. Investigators realize that the dead young woman gave birth shortly before her death. But there is no sign of a baby. Private detective Charlie Parker is hired by a lawyer to shadow the police investigation and find the infant but Parker is not the only searcher. Someone else is following the trail left by the woman, someone with an interest in much more than a missing child.

I had a hard time wanting to finish this book. A lot of bouncing around with different voices and long descriptions throughout the chapters. At times it was very dark. So many people died in this story. I like suspense thrillers and mysteries but I just didn't like this book. I really loved his other work called, "The Book of Lost Things."

Never thought I would say this about a John Connolly book, but I was honestly bored. I truly wanted to feel engaged, but trudged simply because it is a John Connolly..... I pray his subsequent ones will be more substantial and meaningful.

Scary - loved it. Good plot as usual.

More Horror than mystery or thriller. I loved it. Great pace couldn't put it down. Read in one sitting and can't wait for the next one. Please be a next one.

So in the first dozen or so pages we learn that Charlie Parker is visited periodically by his dead daughter, and best- buddy Louis has similar visitations from his dead father. That's it for me. Too Stephen King-esque for me. I did not rate this, because I don't want to discourage people who like this genre. I do not.

Sick, sickening. Not worth reading.
