"In the vein of The Time Traveler's Wife and Station Eleven, a sweeping literary love story about two people who are at once mere weeks and many years apart. America is in the grip of a deadly flu pandemic. When Frank catches the virus, his girlfriend Polly will do whatever it takes to save him, even if it means risking everything. She agrees to a radical plan--time travel has been invented in the future to thwart the virus. If she signs up for a one-way-trip into the future to work as a bonded laborer, the company will pay for the life-saving treatment Frank needs. Polly promises to meet Frank again in Galveston, Texas, where she will arrive in twelve years. But when Polly is re-routed an extra five years into the future, Frank is nowhere to be found. Alone in a changed and divided America, with no status and no money, Polly must navigate a new life and find a way to locate Frank, to discover if he is alive, and if their love has endured. An Ocean of Minutes is a gorgeous and heartbreaking story about the endurance and complexity of human relationships and the cost of holding onto the past--and the price of letting it go"-- Provided by publisher.

I recall the narrator from the film "500 Days of Summer" when he says "...but this is not a love story" as he tries to pre-emptively console the viewer for experiencing a relationship traverse its entire lifecycle. And to future readers of Thea Lim's "An Ocean of Minutes", I can only tell you that this IS a love story, and yet it is so heartbreaking and beautiful and emotional and painful and wonderful. There are twists and turns and you expect things to go one way when they rapidly go in another direction.

Thea Lim's style of writing is disorienting at first, swiftly shifting from present-day to the future to flashback to past to memory that fades into the present and future. As you continue to read you understand that this puts you in Polly's shoes, or boots rather. Time travel is no joke in the world Lim has created, and the strain it puts on the human body is a clever foreshadow of the strains Polly will have to boldly push through if she ever wants to find Frank in the future.

I can't say how much I loved this story. I laughed, I shed several tears, and I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone who believes in true love and the harsh truth of its failures.

I absolutely adored this novel, however the end left me wanting more. So beautifully and eloquently written, I would describe it as a sci-fi version of the time travelers wife. The main character is completely unforgettable as she journeys through time to be reunited with her love, and save him from a world decimating flu.
