Slightly more sizzle than steak. The plot of the movie is very simple but the way it is made is what makes it engrossing. Add to that the rise of Lady G showing herself to have some good acting acumen makes this to be quite watchable even though in my mind it goes on cruise control when that same Lady G does what she is most famous for. I wish there was somewhat less singing - though "Shallow" is a great song - and more acting - this is no fault of her's, though. And, btw, give it up to Mr. Cooper for what should have been a nominated performance and for directing this movie with a wonderful sharpness.

Some of the people writing reviews on this movie don't understand the more nuanced accomplishments from Cooper's directing. The movie starts out where Jackson starts out - heavily inebriated - the filming style is often out of focus. Scenes do cut in and out because he cuts in and out of consciousness due to his drug addiction. As the movie goes on it becomes in focus, he is trying to sober up. You have to understand the vision to understand the movie, it's truly shot in the style of the lead character's development. I think this movie was a triumph in many ways, they didn't sugarcoat the damage done by addiction and it stayed true to the original story that it was a remake of but did a much better job making Jackson's character important and redeemed. The fact that they were able to write music that well, create a film style so definitely shot and directed, and Lady Gaga making an acting DEBUT in such a powerful manner makes it one of the best movies of it's year. Anyone who struggles with issues of codependency from growing up with addict parents, anyone who struggles with addiction or loving an addict, this movie will resonate with deeply.

Do not understand what the hype was about. Needless profanity and nudity. The film was slow and seem disjointed in parts. Would not recommend.

I really don't understand what all the rave was about in the reviews. While Bradley Cooper is a superb actor and Lady Gaga has a beautiful voice but overall I found this movie terrible. Too much foul language and disgusting behaviour of a drug/alcohol abuser for me to enjoy.

You'd think after seeing all the earlier versions of A STAR IS BORN that I wouldn't cry knowing every story beat by now. Not so. This was a worthy remake and Lady Gaga is phenomenal.

I have enjoyed all versions of this movie, including this one. The music and acting are phenomenal. Although the storyline is predictable, its a classic drug/alcohol story with clear enabling of loved ones and paid ones surrounding the addict. I have watched it several times and enjoyed it as much as the first time. Its seedy and not family friendly, but you [should] know that going in. Great job Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga!

I read most of the comments, so won't repeat those written but how could it not be said in any of the comments how very disappointing and oh so inappropriate it was to start out the movie using the F bomb in the first sentence/paragraph? What kind of writing is this for a "classic remake"? That was also the first word out of Bradley Cooper's character's mouth. Wasn't anyone else appalled that an F bomb was considered a great way to start a movie's dialog? Trash and slutty don't begin to express my distaste. Ruined the whole experience. We just turned it off.

High quality junk

I thought it was good but the downfall of the male with the rise of the female singer was inevitable. She put up with waaaaaay toooo much crap from him from his drugs & alcohol fueled life style. I think most people would have said ADIOS a long time ago. She did NOT need his fame nor celebrity. It got a little slow in the middle with the "drama" of his behaviors & rants.
