A touching story. The ending lines actual had a more powerful impact that if you do not pay attention you would miss it.

A restrained samurai film that takes it's time to build up to the climatic ending. With more story and depth than action, this film has some hauntingly beautiful cinematography, using backstory to fill in gaps.
Fine direction by Takashi Miike, and a charismatic performance by Hanshiro Tsugumo. This based upon the story by Yasuhiko Takiguchi, 'Ibun Ronin Ki.'
Special feature has a less than 2 minute recap.

Directed by Takashi Miike as a remake of Masaki Kobayashi's 1962 film Harakiri, this Japanese period drama depicts the miserable life and passionate death of a samurai during the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate between 1619 and 1630.
In those days, a masterless samurai used to set up a suicide bluff in the palace courtyard in the hope of receiving alms from its feudal lord.
In this film, however, the protagonist's son-in-law has to die a terrible death.
The original 1962 film seems much better in terms of the performances of the major actors.

Good movie- yet quite harrowing.

An intriguing film which takes a good deep, dark look at one families down fall in the early 1600's.

Yes, death of a samurai led to many others. Another heart breaking stories about honor, caste, family, misery of peasants and the violence of the samurai way of life. As told, a samurai' s fate could change without his control at any given time, just as many workers today could become homeless or worse if they or family member fell seriously ill and could not afford health care.

This remake falls short of the original by director Kobayashi, with lead Nakadai. Where the original is riveting, this remake is ponderous.

In short, the original by Kobayashi is a masterpiece, and Miike's remake is cumbersome.

Excellent movie - a remake of the 1962 movie of the same name.
The original film focus on honor and loss of face-- the remake shifts the story line to include the pain and suffering of the individual and family
versus the codeifcation of honor and face.

A somber look at the culture of Japan in the 1600's.

It started with an interesting story but the ending was really dumb.
