"New York City, once vibrant and alive, has lost its spirit. People walk the streets with their heads down and their eyes averted, withdrawing from each other and into the cold comfort of technology. Teenagers Mal and Laura have grown up in this new reality: Mal in the city, part of the foster care system; Laura in the suburbs, loved and protected. They've never met. Seemingly, they never will. But then their worlds shift. On the same day Mal learns his estranged brother has disappeared, Laura discovers her parents have inexplicably forgotten her. Both begin a search for their families that leads them to the same terrifying truth: someone or something has wiped the two teenagers from the memories of every single person they have ever known. Thrown together, Mal and Laura must find common ground if they are going to reclaim a past that was stolen from them--and create a future no one can take away...."--P. [4] of cover.

I was one of the people that found this book slow and disjointed. I did not finish it.

Personally I really loved the book. Once I was nearing the end I began lookng up events that happened in the book and found out there was a second book! I had 20 pages left but I couldn’t finish this book just yet, I looked up the second book and there is only 1 in all the Mid-Continent Public Libraries! And it wasn’t the library in my town, so I requested it be transferred. I put it on hold and read 1 page a day until the second one was at my library. Now I am starting the second book and so far I’m just as happy with “What We Become” by Jesse Karp as I was with “Those That Wake” by Jesse Karp.

This book sounded interesting on the flap, it started out really slow, the middle was good and the ending was a bit confusing....

This was just a random book I picked up and almost put down after the first few chapters, but it did get better. It was full of intresting and complicated concepts to a breaking point, and that is basically what happened.
Everything comes raining down in mass confusion at the end of the book. So many concepts and ideas are going around by the end that, while some of the problems come to thought-provoking conculsions, others leave you wanting to scream at the author for leaving you so lost. If you look very hard at the overlapping storylines of the last few chapters, some conculsions can be drawn. But not quite enough for me to be pleased with the book. If you are really into psycologically intense books I suggest you take a crack at it especially since there are some aspects of true psycology study within the book, but if not, you should probably stay away.

Disappointing, I expected much more. It felt like the author just fizzled out. I would not recommend this book to anyone, other than as an example of how not to write a book, or how to make a plot so confusing that your readers just give up on understanding it.
I did however complete this, so it wasn't the worst book ever. But it came pretty close.

This book is trash! I only gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because it wasn't so bad that i stopped reading. The ending was unresolved of the main conflict and plot, I found myself just getting through this book. It was like watching a bad movie.

When I read the front flap of the book, i was excited to be reading such an interesting book. Unfortunately I was disappointed. The book was confusing, the plot uninteresting, and frankly this is one of the worst books I have read this year.
