Gutenberg: How One Man Remade the World with Words. --- by --- John Man. Author Man has succeeded in writing a book that is at once informative history as well as highly readable. Not for a minute is this book dry or stuffy as well it might be given that the narrative is set about five hundred and fifty years ago, a time and at a place few of us could even imagine: this volume goes further than to enlighten us about a man who’s claim to fame is that he printed (an esoteric subject at best) a Bible (what’s that?) with moveable type (boring – nothing to get excited about) but to draw for us the life of this man who has had such a significant impact on the world, our world, one that reverberates even to today. What were the historical and technological prerequisites that made Gutenberg’s invention ripe for his time? What were the consequences, many unforeseen, of his pivotal invention? Man deals with all of these considerations in a way that makes his tale compelling and enlightening: a good book ---as a history book, very good indeed.
