Elsie Schmidt is the baker's daughter in war-torn Nazi Germany's Bavarian village of Garmisch. Her family is able to remain open due to kind-hearted Joseph, part of the local Gestapo. Her sister Hazel is part of the Lebensborn organization. Reba is a young journalist in El Paso today, looking for great stories and love with kind-hearted Riki, part of the border patrol. The novel follows their parallel lives and intersection at a German bakery at Christmas. I won’t deny this is a page-turner, but following McCoy’s 'The Mapmaker’s Daughter,' her work now seems formulaic and a little too predictable. A better book with similar 'secrets’ themes is Jenna Blum’s 'Those Who Save Us,' another wartime story with a bakery location.
