The fifth album from Steven Ellison (aka Flying Lotus, aka Captain Murphy) is a bitches brew of hip-hop, electronica, funk, jazz, fusion, laptop music, and about 14 other things. If Aphex Twin was Warp's dominant recording artist for the 90s, Flying Lotus seems to be the heir to the throne. Guests include Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Herbie Hancock (no coincidence that he played with Miles Davis), and frequent partner in funk Thundercat. Though the album's theme is death (dig that mad, evil cartoon artwork), it's far from an oppressive or grim listen.
