KBOO had an interview with Renee Watson before the release of this book and I knew that I'd want to read it. There are many struggles in the lives of young people growing up, not to mention the struggles they still face when they become adults. The people around us make a huge impact upon our lives, and we learn to navigate the world in hopefully a way that is best for ourselves. Watson writes with sensitivity to the life that Jade leads, the opportunities that are presented which can often be frustrating. It is Jade's sense of self which is partly revealed through the collages she makes, which sees her through. This was ostensibly written for a teen audience, but we could all learn a thing or two by reading it.
