THE GRAY GHOST is the latest in the Sam & Remi Fargo Adventures series. It is the usual fare for Cussler - an entertaining, exciting story line, quick read, and pretty predictable when it comes to the outcomes of dire situations, at least for the main characters. This one has two fun twists to it which is why I rated it 4 instead on my usual 3.5 for his work. Twist number one is found throughout the book. Set in modern times, the book flashes back from time to time to a 1906 journal kept by one of Sam Fargo's English cousins. The twist is that the current crime Sam and Remi are trying to solve is related to a crime in 1906 that Isaac Bell (of the Isaac Bell Adventures series by Cussler) was trying to solve. I like the creativity of interweaving a leading character from a yesteryear setting into a modern crime and the search for clues about who has done what and to whom, then and now. The second twist is that the crime being investigated in both stories is the theft of a classic car. Cussler finally gets a chance to show off his knowledge of classic cars and their restoration as more than just the cameo appearance that we usually see when a classic car is involved in a Cussler novel. In fairness, we need to note that Cussler is working with a partner, who shares authorship (a la James Patterson and other prominent and prolific authors). This is the 3rd novel in the Sam and Remi Fargo series on which Robin Burcell shares in the authorship. Well done to them both for a fun read. PS - I am sure there are variable arrangements when authors start working with co-authors as they get older; but I wish I understood how these arrangements work. I hope they are as profitable to the co-author as they are to the celebrity author.
