All the Ever Afters

the Untold Story of Cinderella's Stepmother
Jul 10, 2019
“All the Ever Afters” by Danielle Teller is a book based on the story of Cinderella—but it is told from the stepmother’s point of view, not Cinderella’s. Consequently, the book is much more sympathetic to Agnes than to Cinderella, who is far from perfect (as the fairy tale suggests). All that Agnes endures in her life is presented in gritty detail, so that the reader can easily see her side of things. She is not portrayed at all as evil. Even when she becomes the stepmother of Cinderella, exasperation is the chief feeling toward her difficult and highly-strung stepdaughter. Agnes’ own daughters are presented as more level-headed and practical (and loving) than they are portrayed in most fairy tales. A fascinating glimpse into the life of the “wicked” stepmother!
